Principal's Note

Welcome to the Berlin High School community! It is our mission to develop and enhance the desire and ability of all of our students, within a safe and positive environment, to become lifelong learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century world by delivering a rigorous and relevant curriculum in partnership with community members. I am looking forward to working with students, parents, and the community to do our best not only in academics, but also in our efforts to create a strong sense of school pride, mutual respect and appreciation for each other, and an overall spirit of cooperation and friendliness.

I welcome visitors to the school at any time and encourage families to communicate with us on a regular basis. Educating today’s youth requires a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and the entire community- none of us can do it alone! We realize the importance of preparing our students for the future and seek assistance through volunteers to help us reach each and every child so he/she can experience success. By working together our partnership will produce confident, successful and happy students.

High school is a time of relationship building.   I believe a principal should be visible and available throughout the day, so I maintain an open door policy for students, parents, teachers, and community members to see me whenever they have a concern.  I can be reached by telephone at (860) 828-6577 and by email at mharnett@berlinschools.org. It is a personal goal to try to interact with as many students and teachers as I can on a daily basis.  Every interaction with a student is a teachable moment, and it is important never to take these moments for granted.

Today’s high school must provide students with a physically and emotionally safe environment to help them with the difficult transition from the securities of childhood to the insecurities of adolescence and the uncertainties that lay beyond.  I remember how hard these years can be and believe there are limitations to how much we can learn if we don’t feel safe and secure to be ourselves and take academic risks.

Working together we can insure that all students are successful and that Berlin High School is, in fact, the pride of Berlin.

Sincerely,

Mr. Matthew J. Harnett
Principal
